BSEC-URTA in the Field: Advancing Intermodal Transport

On 23 October 2026, a BSEC-URTA delegation visited the Akçansa Terminal at Ambarlı Port and met with representatives of Egekont and Grimaldi to discuss the contribution of Ro-Ro services to regional connectivity.

At a time of rapid technological progress, waiting times of 10 to 30 days at some border crossings affect far more than transport operators: they disrupt production, delay goods for consumers and place a heavy burden on drivers. While continuing its efforts to modernise border crossings, BSEC-URTA is also exploring practical intermodal alternatives for the road transport sector.

According to information shared during the visit, Grimaldi operates regular Ro-Ro services from Ambarlı and Gemlik to Greece and Italy through its agent Egekont. Its hybrid Eco-series vessels help strengthen connections between Türkiye, the BSEC region and Europe, while offering an alternative to congested land border crossings.

BSEC-URTA highlighted the importance of efficient yard management, scheduled vehicle admission and coordinated customs procedures alongside physical port capacity. We thank the Egekont, Akçansa Terminal and Grimaldi teams for hosting our delegation, and the port and customs authorities for their contribution to efficient operations at Ambarlı.
